A note on Doug Larsen

FROM THE CHAIR

Doug Larsen is a man worth remembering. He fought for what he believed in. He built businesses and relationships. He demanded respect and quickly became a leader in the North Dakota legislature. Doug Larsen’s life ended when he died in a tragic plane crash with his family.

Life moves quickly, sometimes we do not notice as it passes.

Media distracts from the passage of life. The so-called “news” moves at a torrid pace, flying from one emergency to the next. It is built so everything is forgotten just as fast as it comes.
We’ve become separated from memory. As a leaf falls from the tree, we are blown around with every breathless wind. This is not the way of wisdom.

Senator Larsen’s life is worth remembering. His tragedy reminds us to stop and reflect on our own lives. What will I build? Who do I build for? Will it last for those I leave behind?

Senator Doug Larsen has taught me this: Remember the way of good men.

Follow in their steps.

Build on their shoulders.

Perhaps it is then we will live a life worth remembering.

Endorsement - Carter Eisinger

Carter Eisinger for District 11 House

Carter has lived in the Fargo-Moorhead area for 16 years and is an active member of his community through his university, church, and professional circles. In December, he will graduate from NDSU with bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

In 2021, concerned by the Covid mandates, he successfully ran for the NDSU Student Senate and coordinated a medical freedom rally, attracting media attention across the metro. After the rally, he continued to invest in Student Government, vice chairing the campus media oversight board, managing a campaign for a conservative NDSU presidential ticket, and evaluating spending bills. He also served as chairman of a student leadership team during his engineering internship in Fargo.

Carter's convictions, which he applies both in Student Government and in everyday life, are informed by his faith, belief in limited government, and his steadfast commitment to upholding Constitutional rights.

While District 11 has a strong Republican presence, they haven’t been represented in the ND House or Senate by a Republican since 1995. Carter has stepped up and is running to change this, desiring to give a voice to the conservatives of Fargo.

Please join us in giving Carter your support this November, to bring a conservative voice from Fargo to our North Dakota State House.

Endorsement - Nico Rios

Nico Rios for District 23 House

The North Dakota Young Republican Leadership Team is proud to announce the endorsement of Nico Rios for D23 House.

Nico served as a member of Senators Ted Cruz's capitol hill staff in 2013-14, then moved to the oilfields of ND. He has come to so much appreciate ND and our way of life, that he recently decided to throw his hat in the ring for D23 House. Nico is the clear choice to represent District 23 in the ND House of Representatives this legislative session. He is a man of the people and is down-to-earth working in a suit at our nation’s Capitol, or working in the oilfield. He’s passionate about second amendment rights, parents’ rights, and empowering North Dakotans to live the American dream.

Join us in supporting Nico this November, as he prepares to represent District 23 in the ND House this year.

Label Lynching and its Deadly Consequences

It is with sadness and apprehension that we issue this statement today:

Our sincere condolences are with the family of Cayler Ellingson and the community where this
senseless tragedy occurred.

We, the NDYR, believe in the principles of the Republican Platform; but make no mistake we are
people first; families first; Americans first.

We believe in the freedom for people to forge their own destiny; to make up their own minds; free
from those who would seek to take all that we hold dear, up to and including the precious and
irreplaceable gift of unique life.

We have a pandemic in America and it is not Covid. President Biden, himself, declared that the
pandemic is over but events that have hit all too close to home reignite the realization that there
is still a major problem in America.

This problem is rooted in fearful and deceitful rhetoric; a problem that makes America’s enemies
and the devil himself grin from ear to ear; a problem exacerbated by identity politics to the point
of eruption; instigated by very influential people with very real consequences and tragically very
real suffering the likes of which many people, sadly, lack the empathy to fully comprehend.

This problem has been worsened by the Oval Office, the FBI, and the DOJ, to the Halls of Congress and State Legislatures, and into our local mainstream media sources; slowly creeping into our small tight knit communities; incrementally convincing person by person that people who disagree with you are dangerous; that they hate you; that they want you to suffer and bring you harm; that you should fear them simply because they do not view the world as you do.

The worst part is that there is no opposition to this rhetoric where one would hope or maybe even
expect; the silence is deafening. As if silence from those we look to for guidance and leadership
wasn’t bad enough, this rhetoric has been politically weaponized to silence those who disagree;
permanently.

We see it from local bloggers, like Rob Port, who somehow have prime-time slots to indiscriminately
accuse people of “hate” and worse, while they craft disingenuous narratives to achieve political
agendas. Yet, when young kids, who are just trying to grow up and get a handle on their place in
this crazy world, are run down with a vehicle and killed simply for holding Republican ideals, they
are nowhere to be found; almost as if they don’t see this type of behavior as hate or worthy of
their attention and condemnation; at least not when it happens to Republicans.

As young people watching and waiting for someone to speak up for us; to offer solutions; to clear
the air; we realize very few are willing. It seems we have but one option: We must light the path
and find the way for ourselves, our future, and also those that we believed we could depend on.

It is surreal that it even needs to be said in America today; as if we are living in a place as
cruel as communist China but here we are.

Therefore, on behalf of young people of all cultures and creeds, let us be the first to say
publicly that we, the NDYR, unequivocally condemn the harm or murder of any person or group of
people, for any reason including political or religious disagreement.

We call on Joe Biden to apologize for his deceitful rhetoric that instigated this tragedy. We also
call on other respectable organizations and news media to affirm the same. It is absolutely
imperative to work toward solutions that will boldly reclaim a culture of mutual respect for each
other as we work through tough, and at times bitter, disagreements as friends and neighbors; as
Americans.

North Dakota Young Republicans Statement on Republican Cancel Culture

Cancel culture has become the norm for addressing conflict. We can not grow by negation, it won’t take long before there is nothing left. We must talk about what faces us, because truth is found through words.

For this reason, the North Dakota Young Republican Leadership Team is committed to fostering civil discourse among our members. We provide a platform that aligns with our mission: to recruit, train, and elect young Republicans.

  • NDYR rejects racial, sexual, and religious supremacy of any form. We reject the use of degrading and harmful slurs. We continue to stand with the NDGOP platform to defend traditional family values.

  • We condemn the political weaponization of labels from the media and government against politically active Americans regardless of their political ideology.

  • We refute the libel cancel culture that has been attached to the Young Republicans. We support free speech that's guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. Free speech means you can say what is on your mind without fear of legal action, but freedom requires responsibility. The comments in question from non-dues paying participants do not represent the organization as a whole.

We believe the path to a better North Dakota is not via slander, but through dialogue and the constant pursuit of virtue. Yet we know virtues are cultivated, not canceled.

Yours truly and mutually pledged,

The North Dakota Young Republican Leadership Team

“Pride", Babies, & Elections

Happy 4th of July!

Toward the close of a month celebrating “Pride”, a glimmer of light came as the country was astounded by the news of the historic reversal of Roe vs Wade. As Young Republicans, we are elated that Roe has finally fallen, and we would like to consider a few takeaways.

The decision of the Dobbs vs Jackson case is intrinsically tied to marriage

Just under 50 years ago the Supreme Court of the USA determined that abortion was a constitutionally protected right. With the result of the Dobbs case, the court has stopped reading things into the constitution that were never there in the first place, and thankfully no longer protects abortion as a constitutional right. If that can happen to abortion, what will it mean for the future of marriage? Should our law protect the ability of people to do as they wish as long as it's “private” or should it only protect actions that are good?

Conservatives want something different

It’s no secret that a large reason the court looks like it does today is because of the work of former President Donald Trump. At the heart of Trump's campaign and presidency was the idea that the country needed a different kind of politician. How would the election have looked six or two years ago if conservatives could have foreseen the results of the Dobbs case? Fast forward to today, we had the most ever Young Republicans win in the June North Dakota Primary. With over half of them from Generation Z, it is clear Gen Z is on the move. They have already experienced firsthand the disastrous effects of laws like Roe and want to do something about it. Watch the video below as Rep. Cole Christensen talks about the astronomical effect of abortion on his generation.

North Dakota Republicanism is incompatible with “Pride”

A deeply red state, North Dakota has long been a champion for life, yet homosexual marriage is legal in ND. Down to one clinic performing abortions, ND has been a part of the five other states that have reduced the opportunities for abortions. We should continue to fight for the most vulnerable, but we also must fight for the families that nurture those lives.

A key tenant of ND Republican politics, our NDGOP platform reads on the matter, “Traditional American families should be encouraged and supported by policies to nurture strong marriages consisting of one man and one woman, to support moral values… We acknowledge the immutable biological reality of, and the differences between, the two sexes, male and female, as well as their unique and complementary functions, to be the foundation for natural human life.”

The family (not the government, as liberals would like you to think) is the basis of society. If we support policies that weaken the family, we weaken our state and our country. Conserving what has made America great starts with this God-given institution.

Work to be done

The ruling of the Dobbs case does not end abortion altogether. It is still up to elected officials' interpretation of the laws already set in place to pass guiding legislation for each state. The question of the sanctity of life, the purpose of procreation, and the desired end result will all be on the table, so let’s talk!

It is during this celebratory time that we at NDYR want to affirm our gratitude for the win for life and commend those who have worked to make this court decision a reality. As a part of our resounding support for life and commitment to preserving our party platform, we offer this resolution to close out the month of June.

Together we can keep America great.

Now blast off those fireworks and celebrate our first freedom from overseas tyrants.

Our hard work and dedication are continuing to reap fruit! Join us as we again commit to "Recruit, Train, Elect" the next generation of conservatives.

Endorsement - Sierra Heitkamp for Barney City Council

Sierra Heitkamp for Barney City Council

Sierra Heitkamp is the eldest child of Jason and Sherry Heitkamp.  She grew up in the SE corner of North Dakota, where she is still blessed to call home.  After graduating from Wyndmere Public High School, Sierra attended North Dakota State University, earning degrees in Agriculture Economics, and Political Science.

Sierra started with NDYR at our first state convention in 2017 as our first elected NDYR National Committeewomen.  Since that time, she has remained connected to the organization in a variety of capacities.  Sierra has worked with various political campaigns and nonprofits, most notably as the former Executive Director of North Dakota Right to Life.  She currently serves on the board of the North Dakota Conservative Advocates, spending time working towards the betterment of her community and state.

We believe that Sierra’s experience makes her a well-prepared and qualified candidate to serve the citizens of Barney as their new city council member.

Please join us, and vote for Sierra in the June 14 Primary Election as she seeks to continue to apply conservative, principled leadership in her town.

Endorsement - Keith Boehm for District 33 Senate

In 2021 after a lifetime of voting, Keith decided to get further involved in the political process. Elected as a District 33 Precinct Committeeman in 2021, Keith spent a year getting further involved and discussing what was important to his district. In January of 2022 Keith announced his candidacy for D33 Senate, and in February, received the District endorsement.

Keith firmly stands upon the NDGOP Platform, and if elected, will defend our values throughout the state. As a farmer and small business owner, Keith understands the importance of personal responsibility, believing that is best accomplished when personal property rights are protected. Keith’s 40+ years of work in the coal industry makes him uniquely skilled to understand the relationship between energy production companies and the state. He supports smart solutions to producing reliable energy within our great state.

In line with our recent Resolution, Keith strongly supports the right of parents as the primary stakeholder in all areas of their children's lives.  Keith took part, with many others, in the pro-life advocacy work done in the late 80s, resulting in the closure of the Jamestown abortion facility.  A testament to his commitment to protecting life at all stages, if elected, Keith will bring that passion to the ND Senate as a champion for the unborn.

Join us in supporting Keith at the June 14th election, as conservative leaders continue to step up and be champions for the future of our prosperous state.

Jeff has been one of our strongest supporters, involved in working with NDYR since our inception.  Endorsed by YR in his last campaign, Jeff once again proved faithful to championing conservative values in the ND house.  He was awarded the “NDYR Bulldog” award of appreciation for his service, never backing down from protecting freedom of choice in medical decisions, election integrity, and property tax reform.

Since becoming the mayor of Hazelton at the age of 25, Jeff has been a role model for an active citizen politician.  Inducted to the “NDYR Honorary Members Society” in 2020, Jeff is passionate about preserving the North Dakota he knows and loves for the next generation.

Endorsement: Sebastian Ertelt

Sebastian "Seabass" Ertelt for District 28 Senate

Sebastian has long been a supporter and member of the Young Republicans. Even though at 42 years old he has aged out of the organization (the membership requirement is 18-40), we believe he will continue to be a strong advocate for the Republican platform and the values of our state. This has been consistently represented by his voting record in the ND House of Representatives. He recently has received the honor of being selected as the endorsed candidate by the District 28 Republican Party to represent them in the Primary Election for the ND Senate.

Sebastian's favorite part of the NDGOP platform is "Family and the American Moral Tradition", followed closely by "Personal Responsibility." He believes families are the building block of society, is strongly Pro-Life, recognizes the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman, and believes that without personal responsibility the rest of the platform is meaningless.  Sebastian's values and the decision to reject compromise position him to continue to be a strong advocate for parental rights, recognizing the important role that they play in the education of their children. He believes parents have the right to rear and educate their children according to high standards of character and quality; with minimal government interference.

We believe his passion for service and willingness to advocate for the interests of current and future Young Republicans, along with his roots in the NDYR, makes him a candidate worthy of our endorsement for his run for the District 28 Senate seat.

Please join us in giving him your support!

Endorsement: Damian Johnston

Greetings fellow Young Republicans!

Damian Johnston is running for for Valley City School Board.

Damian Johnston is a 19-year-old high school graduate who currently works as a John Deere diesel mechanic and serves on the Valley City volunteer fire department. Damian grew up in a politically active family and has volunteered on numerous successful campaigns throughout his life, including those of Cramer for Senate and Armstrong for Congress. Damian has also served as the Southeast Region Chairman of the North Dakota Young Republicans for the last year and a half.  In 2020, he received the NDYR “Top Door Knocker” award for his work during the Young Republicans deployment on the successful Michelle Fishbach Campaign for Minnesota District 7 (western MN region), ousting a 30-year Democrat incumbent.

Damian’s commitment to his community has compelled him to run for an open position on the Valley City School Board. He views the public education system in North Dakota as a failure that is not living up to the expectations of the parents. From poor test scores to COVID tyranny, Damian believes there is a lot of work to be done to get our school system back to where it once was. “Parents have a vested interest in their child’s education”, Damian said, “we need to ensure they have access to what their child is taught.”

Damian believes that the best school board member is one who is easily accessible, and available to invest time into the position.  His track record with NDYR attests to this, as he has stepped up to the plate many times during his 4+ year involvement in the organization.

We believe that Damian is the candidate for the job, and are happy to support him for this position.

Chairman's Update: Spring 2022

Another successful North Dakota Young Republicans spring season is behind us.

My mind is fixed on the political climate of the past season, and now that tax day has come and gone and my day job is more manageable, I have set my hand to writing it out.

A little review. Closing out 2021, I represented NDYR at the December NDGOP State Committee Meeting.  Amidst a tumultuous district reorg process, the other notable agenda item dealt with the member and voting status of the YR and CR representatives on the committee.  After discussion, the youth remained on the committee but lost voting status.  We issued a press release that can be found here. I will continue to attend meetings, where I will VOCALLY represent the YR values for our state (which, coincidentally, happen to be the same values as the Republican party platform).

After this meeting, which was shortly before Christmas I might add, I ended up at a press conference, appeared on No Apologies, and was interviewed on the radio twice, once with Daryl Lies of ND Farm Bureau for KFYR Cafe. Again, all of this happened within the two weeks before Christmas, during which time I attended my grandpa’s funeral and then started a two-week road trip vacation.

Starting 2022, in the first week of the new year, I attended a grassroots training event and spoke briefly about the YR presence in the state.

We continued January with a bang, holding our annual NDYR State Convention.  This was my first convention to plan & host as the State Chair for YR.  It was a great experience, holding a full lineup of phenomenal speakers on a variety of topics, updating our bylaws, and connecting with our members.  During our convention, we adopted two important Resolutions, found here.  Most notable, we adopted the Resolution drafted by our National Committeeman Cole Christensen, which he recently saw unanimously passed as D24 House representative in the Special Legislative Session, reaffirming parents as primary stakeholders in their children’s future.

Next, leading up to the District 8 endorsing convention (my district), I had a fun time as the moderator & MC for a candidate panel discussion.  We covered a great list of questions from the audience, allowing the candidates ample opportunity to develop and express their views to the D8 constituents.  Thanks to NDYR SW Region Co-Chair, Bo Rath, for hosting.

The SW Region also hosted an event in the Western Region, featuring our SW Region Co-Chair, Kord, giving his stump speech for the D39 Senate race.  We employed one of our most effective methods of gathering people together, English Country Line Dancing, once again for this event.

Towards the end of District Convention Season (Jan-March), I was pleased to give the nominating speech for an up-and-coming YR, Brandon Prichard, for the District 8 House Race.  He, along with two other great candidates, was overwhelmingly endorsed at the convention.  Another new YR, Matt Heilman, was endorsed at his district convention to run as the new D7 House Candidate, filling the seat of the retired Rep. Rick Becker.

The beginning of April led to another first, our NDYR Reception at the NDGOP 2022 State Convention.  We had a record attendance of YRs in the room, with an overwhelming amount of first-time convention attendees for a grand total of around 2300 candidates.  Another big first, we had our first YR take the podium to give a seconding speech, bringing a new YR face to the NDGOP at large.  It was Emma Peterson’s first public speaking appearance and she took command of the crowd, receiving numerous rounds of applause.

As this spring draws to a close, we collectively turn our faces to the June 14th primary race.  In ND, where “Red Rules”, the primary is the real race.  Like it or not, the real battle is rarely between the Red & Blue, but between Big Tent Republicans (if we can call them that), vs the Grassroots Conservatives.

North Dakota Young Republicans will continue to fulfill our mission to “Recruit, Train, Elect” and to uphold the NDGOP party platform.

I’m here for it.

— Daryle Mindeman,

NDYR State Chairman

Endorsement: Matthew Heilman

Greetings fellow Young Republicans!

Matt Heilman is running for ND State House in District 7.

Matt is from Bismarck and is studying accounting at Bismarck State College, planning to complete his degree at NDSU.

Matt has long been passionate about politics. He has been involved in District 7 Republicans, serving as a precinct committeeman, and volunteers with ND Young Republicans.

As a student, Matt became concerned with the growing influence of Marxist and liberal ideas in his education. He knows that the far-left agenda isn't empty rhetoric, but a set of ideas that wish to revolutionize and overturn the values that have held our communities and families together for centuries. He understands action is required, that if we do nothing our values will continue to be eroded. With a fresh perspective on how to address our problems, Matt will promote conservative ideas and bring real solutions.

Matt will fight for medical freedom, property tax reform, and education reform. He believes that we should not waiver in the face of opposition and will work to uphold the Republican values that have made our great state strong.

Matt is a conservative with a different perspective. He knows firsthand what the liberal agenda can do; he is ready to step up and put a stop to it. Matt Heilman is committed to being a statesman who cares for the people of District 7 and will serve them well.

Brandon for District 8 House

Brandon Prichard is running for the North Dakota House of Representatives in District 8.  He is firmly planted on the Republican party platform and seeks to uphold the conservative Christian values that it was established upon.  Brandon’s activity in local politics dates back to 2017, when he joined the newly formed High School Republicans of North Dakota, and was later elected as state chair in 2018.  Since that time, Brandon has worked on the successful Armstrong and Cramer campaigns, all while completing his undergrad.  If given the chance to represent District 8, Brandon is committed to remaining accountable and accessible to his constituents and our state.

NDYR has had an active role in supporting high school republicans since their inception, and we couldn’t be more excited to see where Brandon has gone in the past five years.

Please join us in supporting Brandon as he accepts the responsibility to step up and conduct the business of our great state, as a proud Christian, Conservative, and Republican.

Kord is a long-time member of NDYR and has helped expand our influence west, representing the South West Region as Region Co-Chairman residing in Dickinson.  He is a US Army veteran, has served as the Chairman for NDGOP District 36, testified on various state bills, and is active in his local community.  Kord’s passion for conservative values has led him to this office, and he is determined to advance these principles in our great state.

PRESS RELEASE: December 18th, 2021

December 18th, 2021

PRESS RELEASE: Next-generation republicans leaders stifled

Bismarck, Ronald Regan Republican Center -

On December 18th, 2021 the NDGOP State Committee passed an amendment changing their by-laws to remove the North Dakota Young Republicans and the North Dakota College Republicans as voting members on the NDGOP State Committee and place them in Ex-Officio non-voting status.

NDYR is disappointed by the actions of the party. The North Dakota Young Republicans (NDYR) was founded and exists to support the Republican party platform and to Recruit, Train, and Elect the next generation of leaders. NDYR is a member of the Young Republicans National Federation (YRNF) consisting of state Young Republican committees across the nation whose membership ranges from ages 18-40. This includes the vast millennial population and up-and-coming Generation Z in North Dakota. Young Republicans are the future, and the future is now.

NDYR has had a seat on the NDGOP State Committee since 2019 serving to represent the young professionals of the Republican party. While lauded for their effort during campaigns by such figures as Kevin Cramer, NDYR’s effort to make their voice heard in other aspects of the political process were received with disapproval by the Party. At the State Committee meeting, the agenda included an amendment to remove the NDYR’s & CR’s from the board, completely. The concern was stated over double representation for Young Republicans, as their district chair was also present. In response to this, a motion was made by District 2 Chairman, Justin LaBar, to remove other positions from the State Committee that were doubly represented. NDYR applauds this motion and is in full support, yet the motion was ruled out of order. While NDYR commends the State Committees' decision to keep YRs on the board (though as non-voting members), they are saddened by this double standard. It has become clear that the NDGOP State Committee desires complete control of the political process, including the youth of North Dakota. NDYR remains committed as ever to the principles of the Republican party that our country was founded upon. Yet it appears the NDGOP would choose power over potential allies.

The goals of the North Dakota Young Republicans are aligned with the Republican Party platform. NDYR is unashamedly pro-life and stands with the party platform, including that traditional marriage is between one man and one woman. NDYR seeks to advocate for conservative principles, limited government, and personal responsibility in North Dakota. While we are saddened to see the divisive state of the Party, NDYR will continue to stand for these principles that have made our state great. NDYR is passionately emboldened to continue to “Recruit, Train, and Elect” the next generation of young professional conservatives in our great state of North Dakota.
